Chignons and French Pleats

Health & Safety:

  • Always look at the client’s scalp to see if they have any skin conditions such as eczema, dandruff etc, this is so you do not drag the comb over the sensitive area and cause irritation or bleeding
  • Look for spots or abrasions and avoid putting heat on these areas to avoid irritation or bleeding
  • For areas of the scalp that are drier or for those with skin conditions, rubbing more conditioner into that section of the scalp will help to moisturise the scalp surface
  • Always check for lice around the neck and ears DO NOT WORK ON CLIENTS WITH HEAD LICE
  • Always conduct a client consultation to see if they are allergic to any products you are planning to use or if they have any skin conditions that could be irritated
  • Check for piercings that could become caught in hair
  • Check the client’s hair for any damage to avoid causing further damage, consider adding serum to help protect the hair

  • Hair bands
  • Hair grips

  • Pin tail comb
  • Medium barrel curling tong
  • Hair accessories
  • Wrap
  • Sectioning clips

Chignons

  1. Wrap the client in the clothing wrap to protect their clothing from heat damage and hair
  2. Wash your hands before working on the client
  3. Brush gently through the hair with the Denman brush from the ends to the roots
  4. Using a pin tail comb, part the hair down the centre
  5. Section the front of the hair from the back of the hair just behind the ears
  6. Section off the front pieces of hair with sectioning clips
  7. With the back section, using a hair band create a low pony tail that is not tight to the head
  8. Back comb the pony tail with the pintail comb to create density and volume
  9. Taking an inch of hair from the end of the pony tail in your fingers, roll the hair loosely back into itself to create a barrel shape
  10. Place the section on top of the hair band and secure in place with 1 hair grip on either side
  11. Stretch the barrel of hair with both hands till the edges of the hair meet with the head of the person (the shape of half a donut)
  12. Using a hair pin slide the pin outwards then tuck back under to hide the pin underneath the hair and secure the hair into place
  13. Repeat on the other side and spray lightly with hair spray to neaten any fly always
  14. Taking the left section of hair from the front of the head, brush through gently with the pin tail comb and bring to the back of the head with no tension
  15. Twist this piece slightly at the back and wrap gently around the bun and secure in the centre and underneath
  16. Repeat this step with the right-hand side of the front portion of hair
  17. Finish by adding accessories and a final spray of hair spray

French Pleats

  1. Wrap the client in the clothing wrap to protect their clothing from heat damage and hair
  2. Wash your hands before working on the client
  3. Brush gently through the hair with the Denman brush from the ends to the roots
  4. Using a pin tail comb, part the hair down the centre
  5. Section the front of the hair from the back of the hair just behind the ears
  6. Section off the front pieces of hair with sectioning clips
  7. Using a medium barrel tong curl the back section of hair in large sections, to give the hair a slight curl, curl away from the face on both sides
  8. Section off the right side of the hair with sectioning clips and brush through the left side
  9. Slightly back comb this section to create volume and smooth the top surface with the comb
  10. Brush the hair to the right of the head and secure the hair in a swoop motion just passed the nape of the neck with hair grips in criss-cross pattern
  11. Releasing the right-hand side of the hair brush through the curls and join it in with the remaining section of the left-hand side
  12. Gathering the hair into 1 piece twist the hair up into itself and pin gently on the outside using hair pins
  13. Once the hair pins are in, using hair grips reinforce the stability of the shape and add more structure
  14. Taking a hair pin dress, the top section of the hair into a barrel shape and pin into place
  15. Taking one side of the front section and then repeating after with the other side, bring the sections back and wrap around the top barrel and pin into place
  16. Finally add accessories and spray with hair spray to lay down any fly away hairs
